Tax Limits
new 9-24-08
8-7-08 Several citizens of Portsmouth turned in signed petitions by a required 10% of the last municipal election. This petition will limit spending of Council to $100,000 without first going to the voters. This petition came about because of the continued negligence of Portsmouth City Council, the Mayor and the Auditor when it comes to running the city’s financial books.
Below is a video taken at the 9-22-08 Conference Session of Council discussing particulars of the referendum.

Several of us came together to write an Ordinance limiting Council’s ability to levy taxes without a vote of the people.
The wording still may need work and ideas are appreciated.
The Ordinance, when completed, will be submitted to Council for consideration and if no action is taken by Council an Initiative petition will be brought to the public for signatures.
Now is the time to get involved for our future.
